MARIA CALLAS GRAND PRIX - PIANO

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION
  1. The "MARIA CALLAS" GRAND PRIX of Greece is open to pianists of all nationalities born between February 1978 and February 1992.
  2. An application form, properly filled in along with all the required documents listed below, must be sent by registered airmail by 30 November 2009 to the Secretariat of ATHENAEUM, International Cultural Centre, 3, Adrianou St., GR - 105 55 Athens
  3. Application form must be accompanied by:

    a) Curriculum vitae.
    b) Detailed information on the musical studies of the applicant (schools attended, seminars, diplomas etc.) as well as names of the applicant's music professors in particular during the last two years.
    c) Prizes won at international competitions.
    d) Two letters of recommendation by musicians of international standing.
    e) Repertoire for solo piano.
    f) Repertoire with orchestra.
    g) The overall artistic activity of the applicant until today.
    h) Programs and performance reviews / critics.
    i) List of the applicant's , CDs or other recordings, if any.
    j) A recent DVD with your performance.
    k) Two recent black and white photographs, size 9x12cm.

  4. Applicants, upon receipt of Athenaeum’s confirmation for their acceptance in the competition, have to deposit, the latest by 15 December 2009, the registration fees amount of €120 at the Grand Prix’s account with BANK OF ATTIKA, Panepistimiou Street Branch (IBAN GR 7701600650000000028383321, SWIFT code ATTIGRAAXXX). This amount is not refundable.

    Bank receipt copy of the above payment has to be sent at the ATHENAEUM, the latest until December 20, 2009, otherwise the candidate’s participation will be cancelled.


  5. The ATHENAEUM will provide the foreign pianists with a formal certificate of participation, which may also be used for the issuance of a visa.
  6. Participants must present their passport or any other official document to the Secretariat as a proof of their date of birth.
  7. Pianists accepted to participate in the Maria Callas Grand Prix must report to the ATHENAEUM's Secretariat three days before the beginning of the competition.
  8. Participants must send all the required documents and the list of the works they wish to perform for the competion ,by 30 November 2009 at the latest.
    (Please do take care to give us the composers' names, full title of the works with opus number and edition). Also participants should give separately the works they wish to perform in the 1st Stage of the competition as well as the works they wish to perform in their recital.
  9. The Organising Committee will not accept any changes in the participants' program after 30 November 2009.
  10. ATHENAEUM reserves the right to have any or all phases of the performances taped, broadcast by radio and television, or published without paying any compensation to participants. Also in case of a recording or a CD/DVD release with the performance of the pianists from any stage of the "MARIA CALLAS" GRAND PRIX, the participants are not entitled to any fee or compensation.
  11. Pianists accepted to participate in the competition must notify the Secretariat of the exact date of their arrival at least four weeks before the beginning of the GRAND PRIX.
  12. Pianists who have been accepted but are unable to participate in the "MARIA CALLAS" GRAND PRIX are kindly requested to notify the Secretariat in good time prior to the beginning of the competition.


ACCOMMODATION
  1. All participants will be offered free meals through the whole period of the competition, starting two days before the beginning of the Grand Prix until its conclusion. This offer is irrelevant to the candidate's success in the different stages. Accompanying persons may also have meals against a small payment.
  2. Only upon successful completion of the 3rd and/or 4th stage of the GRAND PRIX free hotel accommodation will be offered.


EXECUTION OF THE COMPETITION
  1. The "MARIA CALLAS" GRAND PRIX consists of four stages. The sequence of the participants' appearance will be in alphabetical order, this year starting from the letter Ì.
  2. Pianists, who will not succeed to pass in the 2nd Stage, are entitled to ask the President and members of the Jury Committee for advice and counselling on their performance
  3. The decisions of the Jury are irrevocable.


PROGRAM

Participants of the "MARIA CALLAS" GRAND PRIX must present a repertoire of seven concerts for piano with orchestra of their own choice, ranging from W.A. Mozart to the 20th century inclusive.

More specifically:

    a) Two concertos by W.A. Mozart and one concerto by L.v.Beethoven or vice-versa.


    b) Two concertos out of the following:

F. Chopin, nr. 1 and 2
R. Schumann, a min.
F. Liszt, nr. 1 and 2
E. Grieg, a min.
J. Brahms, nr 1 and 2
C. Saint Säens,, nr. 2
C. Franc, Variations Symphoniques
P. I. Tchaikovsky, nr. 1 & 2


c) Two concertos out of the following:

    M. Ravel, g maj.

S. Prokofieff, nr. 1, 2 and 3

S. Rachmaninoff, nr. 1,2,3,4,

Paganini Variations

B. Bartok, nr. 2, 3

R. Strauss, Burlesque

G. Gerschwin, Rhapsody in blue

Concerto in f.

A. Schnittke, of 1960 & 1979

A. Scriabin, C# min.

N. Lutoslawski, Variations on a theme by Paganini

 

    1. A recital of a duration of 50-55 min. that should include
      a) One work by J.S. Bach

    b) One sonata by L.v.Beethoven, to be chosen out of the following:
    op.2 nr 2 and 3, op.10 nr.3, op.7,
    op. 26, op.27, op.28, op. 31 nr 1, 2 and 3, op.53, op.
    57, op.81, op.101, op.109, op.110, op.111.

    c) One important work out of the following composers:
    F. Schubert, R. Schumann, J.Brahms, F. Chopin (the 24 preludes inclusive - this work has to be performed in whole) or the 12 etudes op. 10 or op. 25, and F. Liszt (we can accept a group of 3 etudes transcendantes or the 3 etudes de concert or 3 Paganini etudes)
  • The works of the recital are performed without repetitions.
  • All works should be executed by heart
FIRST STAGE (Preliminary) –
A program of approx. 40 minutes. With piano accompaniment. The participants should present three different concertos of their own choice. (movements are acceptable)

SECOND STAGE
A 50 - 55 minutes Recital (See chapter Program , paragraph 2)

THIRD STAGE - With orchestra.
The Jury will decide the works to be performed at this stage (one complete work at least).

FOURTH STAGE (Final) - With orchestra.
The Jury will decide the works to be performed at this stage too (one complete work at least).

N.B. Participants should bear in mind that the Jury Committee may require from them to execute the whole work, parts of which they have already executed at the first stage.




THE JURY

Members of the Jury will be internationally known personalities in music, from abroad and Greece.



PRACTICE AND ACCOMPANISTS
  1. ATHENAEUM will provide all participants with daily practice studios and piano accompanists for the 1st stage. Participants wishing to have more than one rehearsal with their appointed accompanist should have to pay themselves the fee for the extra hour.
  2. Participants may bring along their own accompanist, for whom however, the ATHENAEUM will not undertake any financial support other than the daily free meals offered on the set dates.

WE KINDLY REQUEST THE PARTICIPANTS:
  1. To write clearly in capital letters or type on their application form, their surname, name as well as their program.
  2. To use French, English or German, which are the languages used for the correspondence.
During the GRAND PRIX, the Secretariat's office will be open from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. to be of service to the participants.
